Injuries Reshaping the Slate — and the Model Noticed First

Five games, a wave of minute redistributions, and one of the cleanest injury-edge slates of the season. Here's how the model sees July 28th, from anchors to buried value.

Arcline Analytics
00 · THE SLATE

Five games, first tip at 7:30 PM ET, 92 players in the pool. That's a healthy slate — big enough to find real differentiation, small enough that roster construction choices actually matter. You're not drowning in options; you're picking locks.

The matchups: MIN hosts TOR, POR and LV play twice (yes, a doubleheader — POR v LV and LV v POR, which matters for stacking), NY faces LA, WSH takes on CON, and SEA hosts IND.

The single biggest story shaping this card isn't a matchup — it's injuries. Multiple players across the slate have had minutes redistributed by teammate absences. The model handles this position-aware and minute-conserving, which means those bumped projections are grounded in who actually fills the gap, not wishful thinking. If you play tonight without knowing where the minutes went, you're leaving real points on the table. That's the edge.

01 · THE ANCHORS

The players you build around. Six names worth knowing before you touch a lineup.

Napheesa Collier ↑MIN v TOR$10.4K3446.566.64.47

Sabrina Ionescu ↑NY v LA$10.3K3635.151.83.41
Shakira AustinWSH v CON$10.0K2933.445.33.34
Kayla McBrideMIN v TOR$9.4K3332.345.53.44
NaLyssa Smith ↑LV v POR$7.0K3331.743.74.53

Napheesa Collier is the unambiguous top projection on this slate at 46.5 points, and the floor-to-ceiling range tells the real story: 25.5 to 66.6. That's not a player you roster hoping for average — that's a player whose upside can win a tournament by itself. Her minutes have been bumped by an injury, which is what gives this number its weight. At $10,400 and a 4.47 value rate, she's expensive and worth it.

Carla Leite is the name to know if you're not completely familiar with the POR roster. An injury has elevated her role, and 34.6 projected minutes at $8,800 with a 50.4 ceiling is genuinely interesting construction. She's in a game that runs twice tonight, which adds a nice wrinkle for stacking.

Sabrina Ionescu against LA with 36 projected minutes — bumped by an injury — gives you the NY v LA game a real anchor. The floor of 17.8 is the honest caveat; Ionescu has always had a wide range. The ceiling of 51.8 is the reason you play her in tournaments.

NaLyssa Smith sits right at the stud-value crossover at $7,000, projecting 31.7 with a bumped-minutes note. That's where lineup construction gets fun — she gives you salary relief to pay up elsewhere.

02 · THE VALUE

The mid-range plays that tie a lineup together. These are the names that let you afford two studs.

Tima Pouye ↑TOR v MIN$3.1K3621.333.96.87

Kia Nurse ↑TOR v MIN$4.1K3621.537.35.24
Teja Oblak ↑POR v LV$3.5K1715.926.74.54
NaLyssa Smith ↑LV v POR$7.0K3331.743.74.53
Napheesa Collier ↑MIN v TOR$10.4K3446.566.64.47

Tima Pouye at $3,100 is the number that stops you mid-scroll. A 6.87 value rate — 21.3 projected points at minimum salary range — driven entirely by an injury boosting her to a projected 36 minutes. The floor is 8.3, which is the real risk. This is a GPP play, not a cash anchor. But at that price, the ceiling of 33.9 can reshape a lineup's entire salary structure.

Kia Nurse is the slightly safer version of the same TOR story — $4,100, 21.5 projected, also bumped to 36 minutes by an injury. The floor is 5.3, which is brutally honest, and that wide range (5.3 to 37.3) tells you exactly what you're dealing with: a volatile play that could be a lineup-winner or a lineup-anchor in the bad way. Know what you're buying.

Han Xu in the NY v LA game at $3,800 gives you a cheap piece of a good matchup. An injury has bumped her minutes to 23.9 projected, and 20.3 fantasy points at that price is legitimate value with a 31.9 ceiling. Nice way to get exposure to the Ionescu stack at a discount.

Collier and Smith appear in both the studs and value charts — that's not a glitch, that's the model saying the same thing twice.

03 · THE INJURY EDGE

This is the model's signature on a night like tonight. Six players with bumped minutes — each one a direct beneficiary of a teammate's absence. The redistribution is handled position-aware and minute-conserving, so these aren't inflated numbers, they're accurate ones.

Sabrina Ionescu ↑NY v LA$10.3K3635.151.83.41
NaLyssa Smith ↑LV v POR$7.0K3331.743.74.53
Awa Fam ↑SEA v IND$8.9K3631.742.13.56
Flau'jae Johnson ↑SEA v IND$9.5K3030.743.33.23

The two SEA players are the ones worth pausing on. Awa Fam ($8,900, 36 projected minutes, 31.7 proj) and Flau'jae Johnson ($9,500, 30.4 minutes, 30.7 proj) both have bumped minutes in the SEA v IND game. If you weren't watching the injury wire, you'd price them at their old baselines. The model already moved on. Fam's floor of 21.2 is one of the firmer floors among the injury beneficiaries tonight — that's a cash-game profile at a price that isn't fully adjusted yet.

Collier, Leite, Ionescu, and Smith we've covered — but seeing them here in the injury chart confirms the through-line of tonight's slate: an injury wave has created opportunity at every salary tier, from Pouye at $3,100 to Collier at $10,400. That's unusually clean. Usually the bumps cluster at one level. Tonight they're distributed across the board, which is what makes construction feel genuinely open.

04 · THE BUILD

On a five-game slate, you want game stacks — rostering players from the same game to capture correlated scoring. A few ways to think about tonight's construction:

The MIN/TOR stack is the highest-upside option. Collier anchors it on one side; Isabelle Harrison ($8,600, ceiling 47.5, bumped minutes) and Pouye or Nurse give you TOR exposure on the other. This is the classic GPP build — pay up for Collier, pair a TOR piece, and use the savings on Smith and Han Xu to round out the salary.

The POR/LV doubleheader angle is the small-slate wrinkle worth noting. Leite and Teja Oblak ($3,500, bumped minutes, 15.9 proj) give you POR stacking in a game that runs twice, and Smith gives you the LV side at a salary that makes it all work. Two games' worth of correlation from one matchup is an advantage on a small slate.

The NY stack is simpler: Ionescu plus Han Xu is the obvious version — $14,100 combined, solid proj on both, and you're in the game with the highest individual ceiling on the slate.

For cash games, the injury-bumped players with the highest floors are the anchors: Collier (25.5), Fam (21.2), and Smith (19.4) are the three names I'd build a cash core around. Tight floors, meaningful upside, and all three are carrying minutes that weren't priced in when salaries were set.

For GPP, you want Collier's ceiling, one or two of the high-variance TOR value plays (Pouye/Nurse), and then a differentiated stack — the SEA/IND game with Fam and Johnson is probably lower-rostered than it should be, given that the minute news is real.

05 · THE BOTTOM LINE

This is a slate shaped by injury news, and the model's job — redistributing those minutes position-aware before most of the field adjusts — is what gives tonight's numbers their edge. The projections are walk-forward validated against both naive baselines out of sample (MAE 6.97 vs. 7.05; methodology is on The Standard), and the floor/ceiling bands are each player's own measured volatility from 5,000 Monte Carlo draws — not a guess, not a generic spread. Collier is the best projection on the board at 46.5 with a 66.6 ceiling, and she earned that number. The TOR value tier — Pouye and Nurse — is high-variance and honest about it: wide floors, real ceilings, GPP only. Fam and Johnson in SEA are the quieter injury story; the minutes moved and the price didn't fully follow. On a five-game slate where correlation is everything, the POR/LV doubleheader is your structural edge in construction. Play the games well, not just the players.
