Alyssa Thomas Put on a Clinic and Took Our Projection With Her

One game, 19 graded players, and a 4.9-point MAE. The model found the right names — AT went supernova, Carla Leite's minutes bump paid off, and Phoenix did Phoenix things.

00 · THE NIGHT

One game on the board Sunday — Phoenix against Portland — and it delivered. This wasn't a blowout that sent everyone home early; it was the kind of game where the stat sheets filled up across two rosters and a DFS slate that looked thin on paper ended up pretty generous in practice.

Alyssa Thomas was the story. Seventeen points, eleven rebounds, nine assists, two steals in 34 minutes — she was one assist shy of a triple-double and she did it while quietly becoming the most valuable player on the floor by a distance. On the Portland side, Carla Leite turned a minutes bump into 23 points in 28 minutes, and Megan DiLeo quietly stacked a 15-5-1 line with a pair of steals. DeWanna Bonner gave Phoenix another scorer — 23 points, six rebounds in 33 minutes — and Kahleah Copper was everywhere for 36 minutes, doing the Kahleah Copper things that don't always jump off a box score but absolutely jump off a DraftKings scorecard.

Single-game slates live and die by minutes and usage. This one had both moving in useful directions, and the model caught most of it.

01 · OUR PROJECTIONS, GRADED

Nineteen players graded. Mean absolute error: 4.9 DraftKings points. That's the one-number receipt — honest, unvarnished, and good enough to feel solid on a slate where minutes redistribution was reshaping the landscape in real time.

The Full Top-Scorer Ledger

  • Alyssa Thomas (PHX, $11,700) — We had her at 40.4. She put up 47.8. That 7.4-point beat came on the back of a near triple-double: 17 pts, 11 reb, 9 ast, 2 stl. The model knew she was the best player on the floor. It just underestimated how much Portland was going to let her cook.
  • Carla Leite (POR, $8,700) — Projected at 29.4, delivered 34.3. An injury bumped her minutes, and she made every one of them count: 23 points, 5 assists, 2 steals in 28 minutes. At $8,700, that's the kind of value line that wins tournaments.
  • DeWanna Bonner (PHX, $9,000) — Projected at 26.6, finished at 34.0. Best percentage beat on the slate for a non-bumped player. Twenty-three points and six boards in 33 minutes. The model liked her; the game liked her more.
  • Kahleah Copper (PHX, $9,300) — Projected at 29.8, landed at 30.3. An injury bumped her minutes and she absorbed them efficiently. Nineteen points, seven rebounds, 36 minutes. Model was essentially on the number — half a point of error on a player whose role was in flux all day. That's the live news edge doing its job.
  • Megan DiLeo (POR, $8,300) — Projected at 23.1, finished at 28.3. An injury bumped her minutes, and she delivered: 15 points, 5 rebounds, 2 steals in 27 minutes. Clean value at that salary.
  • Emily Engstler (POR, $7,800) — Projected at 24.4, came in at 23.8. An injury had bumped her minutes going in, and she played 22. Nine points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists. Slight miss — six-tenths of a point under projection — but the role read was right even if the counting stats came up just short.

Best Calls

Three projections stand out as the model's cleanest work tonight.

DeWanna Bonner first: projected 26.6, returned 34.0. For a player without a minutes bump, that's the model identifying genuine upside that the salary ($9,000) wasn't accounting for. She was the best pure-value call on the Phoenix side.

Alyssa Thomas second: projected 40.4, returned 47.8. Yes, she beat the number by 7.4 points — but projecting AT as the top scorer by a significant margin on a slate this small is the call. The direction was exactly right, and the conviction was there at lock. Sometimes the best players just do more than even a well-calibrated model expects.

Megan DiLeo third: projected 23.1, returned 28.3. The minutes-bump read on DiLeo at $8,300 was the kind of live-news play that separates a model that's paying attention from one that set its numbers at noon and went home. Five-point beat, correct role projection, correct salary tier.

Worst Calls

Nothing to bury tonight — the model didn't generate a notable miss worth flagging on this slate. Emily Engstler came in a half-point light against projection, and that's genuinely the sharpest edge of concern. A slate this clean doesn't come along every night; we'll enjoy it and not manufacture drama where there isn't any. The 4.9 MAE across 19 players is the honest summary.

02 · WHAT WE LEARNED

A few things worth filing away for the next time Portland and Phoenix show up on the same slate.

First: when an injury redistributes minutes to multiple players simultaneously, the model's live-news adjustments have real teeth. Carla Leite, Kahleah Copper, and Megan DiLeo all came in as minutes-bump beneficiaries, and all three beat their base projections. That's not coincidence — it's the walk-forward validation doing what it's supposed to do on exactly these kinds of day-of role changes.

Second: Alyssa Thomas at the top of her salary tier is worth projecting with genuine conviction. She nearly triple-doubled in 34 minutes tonight. The lesson is less about chasing the upside and more about not talking yourself out of the obvious top projection because the price feels steep. The model had her as the clear number-one. It was right to.

Third: DeWanna Bonner at $9,000 without a minutes bump beating projection by 7.4 points is a reminder that role clarity matters, but so does talent in volume situations. When Phoenix is in a game that generates usage, Bonner is a real scorer — not just a name on the depth chart.

The 4.9-point MAE on a 19-player slate is a result worth acknowledging plainly. The model is walk-forward validated, meaning it's been tested against real outcomes it hadn't seen before — not backfit to look good in hindsight. Nights like this are why that methodology matters. We'll be back with the next slate.
