Caitlin Clark Went and Got a Triple-Double

One injury-reshuffled slate, a historic night from Clark, and an honest look at what our model got right, what it underestimated, and what a 7.7 MAE actually tells you.

00 · THE NIGHT

One game on the slate. Indiana and Portland. On paper, a mid-week WNBA matchup that maybe doesn't demand your full attention. In practice, the kind of night that reminds you why you pay attention in the first place.

Injuries reshuffled the rotation on both sides before tip, and the teams that absorbed those changes the best ended up controlling the box score. Indiana got 34 minutes out of Caitlin Clark — 26 points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists, 2 steals, a block. A triple-double. On a one-game slate, with minutes bumped by an injury to a teammate, she turned a role adjustment into a signature performance.

Aliyah Boston was right alongside her — 30 minutes, 14 points, 9 rebounds, 6 assists, 5 steals, 2 blocks. The kind of all-around stat line that doesn't always make the highlight reel but absolutely makes a DFS lineup. On Portland's side, Carla Leite ran the offense with 20 points and 12 assists in 30 minutes, and Bridget Carleton gave you 26 points on 33 minutes off the bump she got from the same injury news. Kelsey Mitchell played 36 minutes and poured in 26 points. Monique Billings quietly put together a 15-point, 7-rebound, multi-steal night in 29 minutes. Every single player on the top-scorer list had their minutes bumped by an injury — and every one of them made good on the opportunity. That's the whole story, really.

01 · OUR PROJECTIONS, GRADED

Nineteen players graded. Mean absolute error: 7.7 DraftKings points. That's the honest one-number receipt for the night. Not a disaster, not a masterpiece — a real number from a walk-forward validated model that beats naive baselines out of sample. Here's how the individual calls shook out.

Top Scorers — Projection vs. Reality

  • Caitlin Clark ($11,700) — Projected 42.0 · Actual 63.0 · Line: 34 min, 26 pts, 10 reb, 10 ast, 2 stl, 1 blk. An injury bumped her minutes, the model caught the bump, projected 42 — and then she went and put up a triple-double. We undershot by 21 points. That's not a model failure; that's Caitlin Clark being Caitlin Clark. You account for it in hindsight with a smile.
  • Aliyah Boston ($10,500) — Projected 38.4 · Actual 46.8 · Line: 30 min, 14 pts, 9 reb, 6 ast, 5 stl, 2 blk. An injury bumped her minutes too. The model had her in the right neighborhood — underprojected by 8.4, right around the MAE. The five steals were the difference.
  • Carla Leite ($8,600) — Projected 35.1 · Actual 38.5 · Line: 30 min, 20 pts, 2 reb, 12 ast. Injury bump, clean hit. A 3.4-point miss on a player whose assist total was the engine of Portland's offense. That's a night the model earns its keep.
  • Bridget Carleton ($8,400) — Projected 26.9 · Actual 35.8 · Line: 33 min, 26 pts, 3 reb, 2 ast. Injury bump, best call. She ran to 8.9 points above projection with 33 minutes and 26 points. At $8,400 salary that's exceptional value — 4.26 DK points per $1,000.
  • Kelsey Mitchell ($10,800) — Projected 35.5 · Actual 30.0 · Line: 36 min, 26 pts, 0 reb, 2 ast. The one meaningful miss on the top-scorer list. The minutes were there — 36 of them — but the peripheral stats weren't. Zero rebounds, 2 assists. The points were fine; the model's projection leaned on a fuller stat line that didn't materialize.
  • Monique Billings ($7,400) — Projected 21.3 · Actual 29.8 · Line: 29 min, 15 pts, 7 reb, 1 ast, 2 stl, 1 blk. Injury bump, best call. The cheapest player in the top-scorer group delivered 4.03 DK points per $1,000. That's where tournaments are won — the $7,400 slot that quietly goes 29.8.

Best Calls

Clark, Carleton, and Billings are the model's flagged best calls tonight, and they all share the same origin story: an injury bumped their minutes, the model identified the redistribution before lineups locked, and the projection reflected the new role. Clark ran away from any reasonable projection, Carleton delivered excellent per-dollar value, and Billings was the kind of cheap punt that wins GPP lineups. All three: min_bumped. That's the signature, and it earned its keep tonight.

Worst Calls

No players were flagged in the worst-calls bucket — but let's not pretend the night was spotless. Kelsey Mitchell was 5.5 points below projection, which isn't catastrophic but is the most notable miss among the top scorers. And Clark's 21-point undershoot is worth sitting with — the model caught the minutes bump and upgraded her correctly; it just couldn't fully account for a historic performance. That's an honest accounting. You want the model to catch the bump. What happens on the floor after that is basketball.

02 · WHAT WE LEARNED

The clearest takeaway from tonight: the injury-minutes signal is real, it was real for every top scorer on this slate, and it is worth building into your process every single day lineups lock. All six top scorers were min_bumped. The model caught every one of them. That's not luck — that's the edge being where it's supposed to be.

The second takeaway is about ceilings. A 7.7 MAE on a night when Clark goes 63 actual versus 42 projected is a model doing its job while a generational player does something uncommon. The projection doesn't have to predict a triple-double to be useful — it has to tell you to put her in the lineup at the right salary. It did. The rest is basketball, and basketball will always find a way to surprise you.

The third thing: Billings at $7,400 going 29.8 is the reminder that tournament construction lives in the cheap slots. The stars are priced to reflect their upside. The value players are where you gain leverage. When an injury bumps a $7,400 player into meaningful minutes, that is the most important piece of information on the slate. Tonight it was true. It will be true again. Watch the injury wire before lineups lock — every time, not just when the marquee names are involved.

One game. A lot learned. Back tomorrow.
