Clark, Injuries, and a Slate That Just Got Interesting

Two games, a handful of injuries, and a model that's already done the redistribution math. Here's how tonight's 44-player pool breaks down — and where the real construction leverage lives.

Two games. First tip at 7:30 PM ET. Forty-four players. That's the whole world tonight, and on a slate this small, every roster decision — especially injury news — ripples through lineup construction in a way that a 6-game Friday simply doesn't allow.

The matchups are IND v DAL and SEA v POR. The Indiana Fever against the Dallas Wings is the headliner: it's where the model's three highest projections live, and where injuries have reshuffled the rotation enough to create real separation between who you want and who you can afford. The Seattle Storm against the Portland Fire is quieter on the surface but comes with its own injury-driven minute bumps that make a few mid-salary names genuinely interesting.

What the model sees on a small slate like this: correlation matters more than usual, value plays have outsized leverage because everyone's building from a compressed salary pool, and the injury edge — minutes redistributed to players who are actually suiting up — is the clearest differentiator between a lineup that's built on yesterday's news and one that's built on tonight's reality.

The projections here use an exponentially-weighted per-minute rate (half-life 10 games), blended with season averages at weights that beat both naive baselines out of sample. Floor, median, and ceiling are the 10th, 50th, and 90th percentiles of a 5,000-draw Monte Carlo, seeded per player from their own measured volatility. It's not a crystal ball. But it's the most honest read of what the numbers say going in.

01 · THE ANCHORS

The studs tonight. The players you build around — or consciously fade if you want differentiation. On a two-game slate, you don't have the luxury of going too cute here.

Caitlin Clark is the obvious top-of-slate name, and the model agrees: 43-point projection, ceiling of 61.9, and she's not a min-bump play — this is just Clark being Clark in a salary slot ($12,200) that makes her a near-lock anchor. The floor of 24.5 is the only honest caution; her volatility is real, and a cold shooting night against Dallas can happen.

Aliyah Boston is the most interesting stud on the board. She's projected at 37.3 — third-highest on the slate — at $10,200, which gets you a 3.66 value score that actually leads all studs. An injury has bumped her minutes, which is why she also shows up in the injury edge section. The ceiling of 58.7 is legitimate, and the salary hasn't fully caught up to what tonight's role looks like. That's the kind of mismatch a small slate rewards.

Paige Bueckers ($11,000, 36.9 projection) is similarly bumped — an injury has expanded her role tonight. Thirty-three and a half minutes projected for a player with a 49.2 ceiling is a real number. Her floor of 24.9 is the most reassuring of the high-salary options if you need someone who tends to keep the floor elevated. Kelsey Mitchell rounds out the IND core at $10,700 with a 36.2 projection and 32.7 minutes — not a bumped play, just a genuinely good rate in a good matchup. Dominique Malonga ($11,200) is the sole SEA anchor among the studs, projecting 36.4 with a ceiling of 53.2 — she's your game-stack anchor if you're building toward the POR side of the second game.

02 · THE VALUE

On a two-game slate with a compressed player pool, the value section is where lineups actually diverge. Everybody can afford Clark. Not everybody finds the right $3,000 play to make her work.

Amy Okonkwo is the most explosive number on this board tonight. She's a Portland Fire player sitting at the $3,000 salary floor, projecting 17.6 — a 5.87 value score that isn't close to anything else on the slate. An injury has bumped her minutes to 17.6 projected, and her ceiling of 38.1 means she has GPP-winning upside from the minimum salary. The floor of 2.8 tells you exactly what this is: high-variance, potentially transformative. You're not playing her for safety. You're playing her because on a two-game slate, a minimum-salary ceiling play that can hit 38 is how you win a tournament.

Haley Jones ($3,000, Dallas Wings) is the other floor-salary option with a minute bump. She projects at 12.8 with a ceiling of 30.1 — lower ceiling than Okonkwo but in the same price neighborhood. If you're not comfortable with Okonkwo's volatility, Jones gives you a similar salary slot with a slightly narrower range. Teja Oblak ($3,700, Portland) and Maddy Siegrist ($3,600, Dallas) both absorbed minutes via injury and sit in the 14-15 projection range with ceilings in the high 20s — that's the middle-of-the-road value tier, useful for tournament builds where you need to make salary work. Myisha Hines-Allen ($3,200, Indiana) is the cheapest way to get more Indiana exposure — 13.4 projected minutes from a bump, projects 11.8, ceiling 24.8.

Boston appearing in this section at 3.66 value is worth noting: at $10,200 she's producing value-tier efficiency at stud-tier production. That combination doesn't come around often.

03 · THE INJURY EDGE

This is the model's signature section, and on a slate where six players across both games have received redistributed minutes, it's especially meaningful tonight. An injury to a teammate has expanded each of these players' expected roles. The model redistributes those minutes position-aware and conservatively — graded slates show only about 20% of redistributed minutes fully materialize — so these aren't inflated pipe dreams. They're honest adjustments.

Aliyah Boston and Paige Bueckers lead this section and were already discussed as studs — worth repeating that the minute bump is the reason both of them carry value scores above what their salary alone would suggest. In a small slate, a player who's genuinely getting more run than the market expects is a real edge.

Natisha Hiedeman ($9,500, Seattle Storm) is the mid-salary injury edge play in SEA-POR. She projects 30.1 with 31.2 minutes and a ceiling of 46.2 — not a cheap salary, but at 3.17 value she's returning reasonable production. The ceiling is tournament-relevant. Bridget Carleton ($10,000, Portland Fire) and Carla Leite ($9,100, Portland) are both bumped Portland players projecting in the 29-30 range — Leite's ceiling of 47.3 at $9,100 is the more intriguing of the two from a pure ceiling-per-dollar standpoint. Arike Ogunbowale ($8,800, Dallas) is the most interesting name here for contrarian IND-DAL game stacks: 27.0 projection, ceiling of 42.2, and an injury has bumped her minutes to 31.6. At $8,800 she's not cheap, but she gives you Dallas exposure in a price range that lets you stack Indiana's core without breaking the bank.

04 · THE BUILD

Two games means two directions. Here's how to think about both.

IND-DAL game stack

This is the highest-projection game on the slate and where most of the minute-bump action is concentrated. The natural core is Clark + Boston — Clark as the top-projected player on the board (43.0), Boston as the value stud with bumped minutes (37.3, 3.66 value). From there, you're choosing between Bueckers and Mitchell as your third high-salary piece. Bueckers gives you Dallas exposure (necessary for game-stack correlation in a GPP — you want both sides) and bumped minutes. Mitchell gives you more Indiana ceiling without the injury-news dependency. Ogunbowale is the contrarian DAL play that pairs naturally with a Bueckers stack. Fill the cheap slots with Hines-Allen and either Jones or Siegrist to stay solvent.

SEA-POR game stack

Malonga anchors this one. Pair her with Hiedeman (bumped minutes, 31.2 projected) and then go to Portland for correlation — Okonkwo at the salary floor is the GPP-ceiling play, Carleton and Leite are the mid-salary options with bump upside. Oblak at $3,700 keeps you liquid. This game stack is lower total projection than IND-DAL, but if you're building a differentiated tournament lineup, the SEA-POR core with Okonkwo's upside is the kind of contrarian structure that wins big fields when it hits.

The hybrid

Clark is rosterable in both builds — her 61.9 ceiling makes her the clearest GPP anchor on the slate regardless of which game you're stacking around her. Build your correlation in whichever game you trust more, then pay up for Clark and fill down with the bumped value plays that make your salary work.

05 · THE BOTTOM LINE

This is a small slate with a real injury story, and the model has already done the redistribution work — position-aware, conservatively scaled, grounded in what actually materializes on graded slates. Clark is the best projection on the board and legitimately worth building around; Boston is the most interesting combination of bumped minutes and salary value on the whole two-game card; and Okonkwo at the minimum salary is the kind of GPP-ceiling play that a two-game slate can actually support because everyone's roster is compressed and differentiation is harder to find. The projections here are walk-forward validated against both naive baselines out of sample, and the floor/ceiling bands are each player's own volatility — not a house-generated range. Some of those floors are genuinely low, which is the honest read on a slate where injuries have introduced real uncertainty. Build with that in mind.
