The storyline. For the first time since 1973, the Knicks raise a championship banner at the Garden. Jalen Brunson, Karl-Anthony Towns and OG Anunoby beat the Spurs in five games in the Finals, and San Antonio led by double digits in all four of its losses. New York closed it out by rallying from 16 down to win Game 5, 94-90. Now the visitors walk in looking like a different franchise. Philadelphia got Jaylen Brown from Boston in a trade. The five-time All-Star is coming off a 28.7-point, 6.9-rebound, 5.0-assist season that put him in the MVP conversation. Shortly after, LeBron James signed as a free agent. He starts his record 24th season with his fourth team.
Key matchup: Brunson vs. a rebuilt Philadelphia rotation. Tyrese Maxey made All-NBA last season. VJ Edgecombe made All-Rookie. Add Brown and LeBron and the 76ers have a lot more ways to score. New York swept Philadelphia in the second round last spring, but Joel Embiid missed a game in that series and played through ailments in the others, and LeBron wasn't there.
By the numbers (2025-26, via StatRankings). Brown had a 36.4% usage rate in Boston with 57.3% true shooting. Maxey was at 29.8% usage, and LeBron shot 59.4% true in 60 games with the Lakers. That's three players used to running the offense and one ball. Brunson is the steadier known quantity: 30.7% usage and 57.8% true shooting.
What we're watching: Joel Embiid. He's the swing piece for Philadelphia's season. If he's healthy, Philly's ceiling in this game and in the East changes. Embiid is not on the official injury report (11:45 AM ET update).
Injury report (11:45 AM ET). Philadelphia: Dominick Barlow (low back stress reaction), Tacko Fall (left quad strain) and Ariel Hukporti (right Achilles) are out. Adem Bona (left foot sprain), Anfernee Simons (left hamstring tightness) and Dean Wade (left ankle sprain) are questionable. New York has no one listed.
