NFL GAME PREVIEW
Sunday at 1 p.m.the roles that change the slate
Eight games, replacement-quarterback decisions, and the difference between a favorable matchup and a favorable price.

The 60-second read
- NYJ–CHI Under 43.5 (-120) · The names missing from Jets–Bears matter more than the season averages.
- LAR -3.5 (-112) · Philadelphia’s missing targets do not magically become easy targets.
- DAL +3 (-112) · Houston has the plays. Dallas has been doing more with them.
- Cade Otton Over 24.5 receiving yards (-116)
These are editorial research leans at the quoted prices, not claims of a validated positive-EV model edge. Winner views are separate from bets. Overlapping game and player views can be correlated.
Buffalo can win comfortably without making every passing Over a winner.
The Bills have the best ARBY rushing matchup in StatRankings’ Week 4 report, and New England has defensive tackle Christian Barmore ruled out. James Cook already owns nine red-zone carries and four inside the five. A Bills lead gives him a straightforward route to work even if passing volume levels off.
The Patriots also lose Christian Gonzalez. That improves the reason to examine DJ Moore’s matchup, but it does not turn a 55.9% season route rate into a full-time role. Moore’s 20.9% target share is appealing; the amount of time he is actually on a route remains part of the price. Josh Allen can have a very good game without delivering enough attempts for every receiver to clear an aggressive line.
New England’s response may come through shorter completions. Buffalo has allowed 24 targets to running backs in the report, while Rhamondre Stevenson has run a route on 52.8% of the Patriots’ passing opportunities. That is a reason to inspect his receiving markets, not to manufacture a rushing bump. Buffalo is my winner call. At a full touchdown, the spread has less breathing room than the matchup headline suggests.

Build a story, then build the lineup
Allen plus Moore is the aggressive passing construction; Allen plus Kincaid attacks a different share of the same offense. Cook is the alternative when your lineup tells a Buffalo-control story. Stevenson can be the opponent return in a build that needs New England to chase through the air. Allen is not on Buffalo’s final injury report, and Moore has no game-status designation.

The names missing from Jets–Bears matter more than the season averages.
Caleb Williams is out. Breece Hall is out. Adonai Mitchell is out. Start there, because a straight copy of either team’s first three weeks would describe a game that is no longer being played. Chicago’s 69.3 plays per game is useful background; it is not a promise that a replacement-led offense will sustain the same number of drives.
The interesting tension is in the trenches. Chicago has allowed pressure on 44.7% of dropbacks, but the Jets have generated it on only 20%. That gives the Bears a plausible escape route: lean on D’Andre Swift and ask the passing game to make manageable throws. Swift’s 14 red-zone carries and six inside the five show why the ground game deserves attention. They do not establish what his touchdown probability becomes with a different quarterback. Swift finished Friday as a full participant with no game-status designation. Chicago has not settled the starting-quarterback question in its team update; these forecasts use Bagent, with Keenum the alternative.
For New York, Hall’s absence creates an opportunity question around Braelon Allen rather than permission to transfer every missing touch to him. Garrett Wilson’s 26.5% target share is the receiving role I trust most in the historical evidence. The Under is a research lean because both offenses face meaningful changes, not because backup quarterbacks are automatically incapable. A short-field turnover is the obvious way a lower-volume game can still get over the total.

With Bagent starting, Bagent plus Luther Burden III is the cheaper passing construction; Burden has a 23.5% target share in the report. Swift offers a separate rushing route. Braelon Allen is the Jets backfield name to examine with Hall absent. Garrett Wilson is the receiving return. Confirm Chicago’s starting quarterback before entering the Bagent stack.

The shootout everyone sees still has a quieter way in.
The high total makes Cincinnati–Jacksonville an obvious stacking destination. The less obvious decision is which Jacksonville player should come back in the stack. Parker Washington has a 28.4% target share, 37% first-read share and 81.4% route participation in StatRankings’ report. Brian Thomas Jr. has a 14.8% target share and 58.1% route participation. Name recognition is not a substitute for the current distribution of work.
Cincinnati’s defense has sent 27.8% of opponent targets toward tight ends, with 30 tight-end targets faced. Brenton Strange is therefore a sensible alternative to study, particularly when his salary lets you keep the Cincinnati receiver you actually want. His own 12.3% target share is the restraint: an opponent funnel can help a role, but it cannot create a featured role from nothing.
On the other side, Jacksonville has allowed 66.7% of targets to wide receivers. Ja’Marr Chase’s 97.3% route participation supplies the volume foundation; Tee Higgins’ 13.1-yard average target depth supplies a different path to a ceiling. My winner call is Cincinnati, but the total already asks for a productive game. I would rather choose the passing combinations than automatically bet the Over simply because this is the most attractive total on the early board.

Joe Burrow plus Chase or Higgins, with Washington coming back, is the straightforward construction. Burrow plus both receivers needs a more concentrated passing eruption and consumes more salary. Strange is a salary-based alternative return, not a proven low-owned play. Check the updated ownership estimate before calling either construction leverage.

Forget the receiver labels. The tight ends are driving these offenses.
Trey McBride has 29.1% of Arizona’s targets. Isaiah Likely has 27.7% of the Giants’ targets. Before reaching for an outside receiver, recognize what these offenses have actually been feeding. McBride’s eight red-zone targets add scoring opportunity to the catches; Likely’s 79.6% route participation makes his involvement more substantial than an occasional tight-end package.
The Giants’ 45.1% man-coverage rate creates a useful question for Arizona: can its primary targets keep winning early in the route? Michael Wilson has a 26.5% target share and 95.9% route participation. That is a role worth taking seriously alongside McBride. It is not necessary to invent a personal cornerback matchup to explain why the ball can find him.
The limitation is game speed. New York’s 37.3-second neutral pace ranks near the slow end of the report, and its offense has produced 0.25 points per play. Arizona’s defense has nevertheless allowed 0.49 points per play, which keeps the Giants’ scoring path alive. I lean Arizona to win, but I prefer examining concentrated receiving roles to forcing a full-game stack or laying points without a stronger margin.

Jacoby Brissett with McBride and a Likely return expresses a specific middle-of-the-field game. Wilson can replace McBride when the salary and projected ownership make the outside passing route more attractive. Do not add both Giants receivers merely because you already started a game stack.

Philadelphia’s missing targets do not magically become easy targets.
Philadelphia has DeVonta Smith, Dallas Goedert and Marquise Brown ruled out. Smith alone carried a 30.7% target share and 94.3% route participation in the Week 4 report. There is work to redistribute. There is also a very real possibility that the offense becomes less effective while redistributing it.
That distinction is why I lean toward the Rams against the spread rather than declaring every remaining Eagle an automatic Over. Philadelphia has already allowed pressure on 39.6% of dropbacks. Dontayvion Wicks and Makai Lemon can gain routes or targets, but more difficult throws and fewer sustained possessions can offset some of that opportunity. The Rams have allowed a quarter of opponent targets to running backs, which makes Saquon Barkley’s receiving role particularly relevant to the survival plan.
Los Angeles has its own imperfections. Its offense has produced only 0.31 points per play, and Philadelphia has generated pressure on 36.9% of dropbacks. Davante Adams’ 25.4% target share and 17.2-yard average target depth offer upside, but those deeper routes still need protection. Kyren Williams provides a different route if the Rams get in front and shorten the game. A Philadelphia pass rush that wins immediately is the clearest threat to the Rams lean.

Matthew Stafford plus Adams, with Barkley returning, is the passing-versus-checkdown construction. Williams is a useful alternative for a Rams lead built through rushing touchdowns. Tampa’s protection problem now comes with a quarterback change.
Tampa Bay has Baker Mayfield ruled out. That comes on top of an offense allowing pressure on 51.6% of dropbacks in StatRankings’ report. The first question is whether the replacement can keep the offense on schedule, not which Buccaneer gets a cosmetic projection bump.
Green Bay does not have an easy rushing answer either: its ARBY matchup grades last in the Week 4 slate. Tampa’s 48.1% blitz rate and 73.4% single-high usage point toward an uncomfortable but potentially explosive passing test. Matthew Golden and Christian Watson account for 24.2% and 23.4% of Packers targets. If Jordan Love handles the pressure, there are reasons for those receivers to matter. If the protection fails, the same coverage can produce stalled drives instead.
Bucky Irving and Cade Otton are the Tampa players I want to examine in the shorter game. Otton’s 80.3% route participation offers a more dependable starting point than assuming a backup quarterback will reproduce Mayfield’s downfield distribution. Green Bay is my winner call. With a low total already on the board and uncertainty at quarterback, I do not need to force an additional full-game bet.

Cade Otton Over 24.5 receiving yards (-116)
Otton’s 80.3% route participation is the opportunity I want to buy. Tampa’s protection trouble and quarterback change make shorter throws a plausible answer; the forecast is 36.8 against 24.5. The risk is that the replacement offense cannot sustain drives at all. Tampa has confirmed Jalon Daniels as the replacement starter.
Build a story, then build the lineup
Love with one of Golden or Watson is a targeted tournament stack. Kraft is the alternative when you expect pressure to redirect throws inside; Tampa has allowed 25.8% of targets to tight ends. Irving is a possible opponent return; he finished Friday as a full participant with no game-status designation. Tampa Bay has confirmed Jalon Daniels will make his first NFL start. The replacement projection is less established than a veteran starter’s.

A great Ravens afternoon can be a modest Lamar passing afternoon.
Lamar Jackson and Mark Andrews finished Friday as full participants with no game-status designation. Baltimore is my winner call; how it wins matters more to the player markets. Derrick Henry has 20 red-zone carries and nine carries inside the five in StatRankings’ Week 4 report. Baltimore throws on only 41.5% of neutral-situation plays in its first play-calling table. A Ravens lead can be excellent for Henry without requiring Jackson to pile up passing yards.
Tennessee plays quickly between snaps, but speed has not produced sustained volume. The Titans average 52.3 plays per game, while Baltimore’s neutral pace is the slowest in the report. A fast team that keeps giving the ball back can still spend much of the afternoon watching the opponent run. That is why the Titans’ pace alone does not justify an Over or a giant game stack.
The return options are not interchangeable. Carnell Tate has a 22.7% target share at an 11-yard average target depth; Wan’Dale Robinson has a 20.5% share at 5.1 yards. Tate needs more yardage per catch to pay off; Robinson can accumulate receptions while Tennessee chases. Baltimore is my winner call, but an 11.5-point spread has already priced in a substantial mismatch.

Houston has the plays. Dallas has been doing more with them.
Here is the useful disagreement in the data: Houston averages 67.3 plays per game but only 0.27 points per play. Dallas runs fewer plays—59.3 per game—but produces 0.49 points per play. Three games cannot settle which offense is better, but they explain why I am interested in Dallas with the points rather than assuming Houston’s volume is already efficient scoring.
CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens each have a 23.8% target share. Lamb leads slightly in first-read share, while Pickens has the higher route-participation rate. That gives Dak Prescott stacks two credible foundations. Houston has played man coverage on 40.7% of snaps in the report, but its pressure creation is only 23.7%. The question is whether Dallas can turn those routes into timely chunk gains before Houston changes that protection equation.
Houston’s answer may be less glamorous than the most recognizable names. Dalton Schultz has a 20.7% target share and Xavier Hutchinson 17.4%. Nico Collins’ season participation is much lower, so his actual current role needs checking rather than an assumption based on reputation. Dallas +3 is my research lean. The case weakens if Houston begins converting its extra possessions into touchdowns instead of merely winning the play-count comparison.
